Vw Mk7 Golf Gti Blue Tint Aspherical Mirrors

  • #1

Anyone know how to do this replacement, or know how to get the outer mirror covers off? I figure if I can get the main mirror covers off I'll be able to see how to do the swap.

Very simple...no need to remove the outer mirror covers...adjust the mirrors so they both point outward as far as they will go. Put your fingers behind the mirror and pull hard straight out and it will pop off in your hand. Disconnect the two heater element wires and reconnect to the new mirror (make sure you looked at which wire went on which terminal). I did it in my parking lot at work and took less than 5 minutes per mirror. When you install the new mirror, press firmly in the CENTER of the mirror where the connection points are and you will here it click into place. Really very simple:D

Glenn, would you mind posting a picture of what these look like after you get them installed ?

^ I would recommend you don't get the blue tint ones as I have heard they start to peal and come apart. Just get the clear ones IMHO.

I have had the clear ones for a couple of years now and had no problems wiht them. They are on their second Jetta...;) :D and I still love them; I would not want to drive the Jetta without them.

np. I'll try to remember to do that.

The reason I got the blue ones is because the lights of other cars really bother me when driving at night, even with glasses.

I bought the clear OEM ones as SBA suggested. I have read numerous posts that the blue ones "may" peel (depends upon who makes them) and, more importantly, that they are much harder to see out of at night. I am not looking for the "cool factor" but for the safety factor and don't want the tint hindering my ability to see clearly and safely at night:eek: The whole purpose of these mirrors are to AVOID cars on your right and left for confident lane changes and what good are they at night if they impeed that purpose.

I went with the clear OEM ones as well, because I didnt know how the blue tint would be at night with my tinted windows, plus I found out that OEM aspherical mirrors did not have the option of a blue tint, and that made the decision for me. I dont see the reason to waste money on parts that are not OEM, but if you want the blue tint, I'd try to find a place that sells the factory mirrors and just tints it themselves, I would recommend against going the chinese route.. but the install is just as easy as security guy said.

Blue Tint OEM went the way of the Condor back in 2003.

Clear Asphericals are the way to go.

dayne...the asphericals are GREAT! I have no regrets and they show me everything I want to see clearly:)

I would agree that it may cut glare but it certainly doesn't improve/enhance night visibility. If the appearance is similar to that of taking your rear view mirror and placing it in the "night" position when someone's shooting high beams at you from behind, the rear view is severely limited and only cuts glare from the lights...the overall view is diminished...that's the nature of the tint and I have never seen any tint that improves visibility at night. We all have opinions on the matter but I have spoken to enough folks that have the tinted mirrors to hear that it does diminish night visibility to cause me to go OEM clear. ECS does have a nice product and I bought my clear ones from them and I would assume their tinted mirrors are of far superior quality than what you would get on eBay from China.

Since there is a downside (bad 'night vision') with the blue, I'm going with the clears. But, still am up in the air about aspherical or convex on the pass side. Any opinions on that?

On the drivers side they are superb. On the passenger side not so much, but it depends on what the roads are like where you are. I used to live in the UK where you could only legally overtake on the drivers side (in this case the right side of the car). So it wasn't often that you worried about people coming up on the inside. Here in Canada and presumably the same in the US they overtake on both sides so the aspherical passenger mirror is useful but I find there is less of a blind spot issue with the passenger side.

I didn't get blue tint to improve visibility or to enhance anything, or for any "cool" factor. I got them to tone down the lights behind me so that I don't feel like I am being blinded. Right now, the cars behind me are so irritating that I either drive one-handed with one hand blocking the left mirror, or I aim the mirror down out of the way. This is a personal preference related more to my 50 year old eyes and astigmatism than to anything else.

I'm really anxious to get these installed, but it's been so cold, even in my garage that I'm afraid to stress the plastic trying to get them switched over. Perhaps in a few weeks....

there are a few places that sell them with blue tint, but none are OEM. From what I have learned at least for the mk5 vw does not make aspherical mirrors w/ blue tint.
